Water Supply Update
Irving is looking ahead to provide a diversified supply of water in response to a regional problem of limited resources. Though the city’s primary water source, Lake Chapman, is not in danger of running out of water, additional sources are being considered to ensure an adequate water supply to support future growth in Irving.
One of these water sources includes an agreement with the City of Hugo, Okla. This cooperation provides clear benefits to both the Hugo and Irving communities: Hugo has accessible and potential surplus water in Hugo Lake, and Irving has an existing pipeline with available capacity that partially extends to Hugo.
Currently, the sale of water across state lines is prohibited in Oklahoma; however the City of Irving is supporting the City of Hugo with its legal issues associated with changing the laws. Once all legal issues in moving the water are resolved, Irving will purchase a portion of the total water supply from Hugo and potentially make some of the water available to other regional water suppliers by constructing a pipeline extension to Hugo Lake.
Irving and the North Texas region will benefit from this addition of a working partner in Oklahoma, and the assurance of a long-time supply of raw water. In addition to the Hugo water supply agreement, Irving continues to look into the purchase of additional water from the City of Paris.
City staff also works to educate residents about water conservation efforts. For details on water conservation, visit www.cityofirving.org/water-utilities/water-conservation.
